Foster Care in San Antonio

Being a foster parent is an opportunity to make a profound difference in a child’s life. BCFS Health and Human Services-San Antonio Foster Care will be your partner at every step in the process.

Children served by BCFS Health and Human Services-San Antonio are:

  • Children up to 17 years of age
  • Individual children or sibling groups
  • Under state or federal care

Basic requirements of foster parents:

  • Be willing to meet the spiritual and religious needs of children fostered
  • Have a viable source of income
  • Be at least 25 years old
  • Be in a marriage of at least two years
  • Complete the screening process and pre-verification training requirements
  • Demonstrate a nurturing parenting style
  • Have adequate bedroom space
  • Be willing to work with BCFS-San Antonio staff to implement a plan of care
  • Maintain daily documentation in compliance with government and agency standards

Responsibilities of foster parents to the program:

  • Complete required hours of annual training
  • Work cooperatively with program staff during in-home meetings, visitations and appointments
  • Provide input and assist in setting short- and long-term goals for the children
  • Adhere to child-care regulations and procedures as defined by the government and the BCFS System
  • Maintain a relationship with the many individuals involved in the care of foster children, including but not limited to government caseworkers, school authorities, children’s attorneys and therapists

Responsibilities of foster parents to the children:

  • Provide room, board, clothing and any other personal care items
  • Provide a reasonable allowance
  • Accept them into the family
  • Establish rules and fair limits
  • Provide all transportation needs
  • Participate in quality activities with the children

Matching parents with children:

The following will be considered and evaluated when determining which children will be placed in a particular foster home:

  • The parents’ preference for the age and sex of the child, and the behaviors the parents are willing to work with
  • The ages, sexes and needs of any other children living in the home
  • The amount of supervision parents can provide
  • Personality compatibility

Training:

The BCFS System’s mission is to provide parents with the tools necessary to meet the needs of the children in their home with the greatest ability possible. Training available through our agency includes:

  • Corrective Teaching
  • Child Effective Praise
  • Transitions
  • Medication/Universal Precautions
  • Teaching Self-Control
  • Separation and Attachment Policy and Procedures
  • Consequences Reporting Child Abuse
